You may have heard of social signals before, but a lot of people don’t know how they work for SEO purposes. There’s a many misconceptions regarding social signals and SEO, so I am trying to clear up some of the confusion for you.

But they can have an impact on Google SEO in an indirect manner, as well. See, the more your content becomes shared, the more likely it’s to be seen, which can lead to more people viewing and linking to your articles. It can be quite tricky to get organic links these days, so anything you can do to increase the odds of your content becoming linked to and seen is an excellent thing!
You might have heard of social signs before, but a good deal of people do not know exactly how they work for SEO purposes. There’s a good deal of misconceptions regarding social signals and SEO, so I’m going to try and clear up some of this confusion for you.

First of all, Google says that social signals aren’t a direct ranking element. This doesn’t mean social signals won’t assist with Google SEO in an indirect way, which we will discuss later, but it means it won’t directly boost your rankings in Google. Matt Cutts of Google posted a video many years ago that said Google does use data from social sites in ranking, but this is outdated now, and may not be accurate anymore.
Bear in mind, while a lot of this is speculation and conjecture because very few individuals are privileged enough to understand how search engine algorithms actually work, my findings are backed by real experimentation with my own websites and clients.

While social signs may not necessarily have an immediate impact on your positions, at least where Google is concerned, they can certainly have an impact on other search engines and will make it easier for others to locate your content and link to it. You could also get some direct visitors from your social networking profiles, so this is an additional benefit, too, which definitely makes it worthwhile to focus on social media as one element of your total SEO and digital marketing strategy.

Only share your very best content. This may seem a little counterintuitive, as you need traffic to all your content, however sharing just your very best content can allow you to get noticed more often on social media. For example, Facebook reveals content from pages that get a whole lot of engagement more often than pages with less involvement, thus by posting only your very best content, you can make certain that all of your articles have a good engagement speed, which will allow your content to be shown more frequently.

It’s also important that the content you’re marketing is actually engaging once the user lands on your page, otherwise, this practice can be detrimental to your overall SEO plan.
4. Use Social Sharing Plugins
Use plugins to make sharing your content easier. There are lots of good social media plugins you can use on your site to insert links to the most popular social programs, allowing users to directly share a piece of content on various platforms.
Be sure to link to your website in your profile. Even if the links have nofollow tags, you might still get some direct traffic when folks find your profile through search engines or via the social platforms themselves.
Bing, however, is another story. Likes and stocks definitely do have a direct effect on Bing search rankings. You may think Bing does not matter, but roughly 24% of internet searches are done via Bing instead of Google, and that number has been steadily climbing for several years. Bing can send a substantial quantity of traffic, so at the very least, social signals are worthwhile if only for boosting your rankings in Bing.

Just make certain you’re following the guidelines of the social networking platforms you are posting to because many have begun cracking down on deceptive clickbait practices (which you should avoid).
